Auteur is the result of an exploration of New Wave crime films of the 1960s. It emulates the peculiar typographic details found in the era’s styling, while being rounded out with a contemporary cadence. The design has a calligraphic, broad-nibbed pen structure and features nuances like trumpeted terminals that give it a distinct texture for reading at smaller sizes.
This typeface was completed during the second and third terms of the Type@Cooper Extended Program.

Auteur is constructed with translation contrast, which means that the letterforms were drawn as if they came from a broad-nibbed pen—maintaining a particular angle and thickness depending on the shape of the stroke.
Expansion typefaces follow the structure of a pointed pen, where thicker areas are created by applying pressure.

Another attribute of Auteur is that it's a text typeface. In order to create a typeface that's optimal for a target size—the target size is 8pt—a typeface must have letterforms with: low contrast, open apertures, a square construction, and letter shapes that follow a trapezoid.
The low contrast prevents the thinnest strokes of a typeface from vanishing in smaller sizes and produces a more uniform paragraph color. Open apertures allow for letters like the a, c, and e to let more negative space in, making their shapes easier to recognize. If the apertures are closed, then they can appear blotchy on the page. The square construction prevent too much negative space between letters, improving readability. Lastly, the trapezoidal shape helps words feel more grounded on the baseline.
