Pressing Matters
Pressing matters is a conference dedicated to giving relevance in a modern, digital age by appreciating the tactile, historical, and artisanal aspects of the craft. It is located in Berlin, whose architecture parallels the history of typography—fusing old aesthetics with the new and contemporary. Also, Germany is home to the Gutenberg Press, historically one of the most important inventions of all time.
Pressing Matters aims to blend modern typography nuances with traditional letterpress elements.

Hand-bound using a variation of Smyth binding, the main booklet is able to lay flat without a gutter. The debossing was done with Boxcar Press KF95 blank A4 polymer plates. I personally exposed and prepped the plates for printing, which involved a similar workflow to exposing screen printing emulsion.
A negative is exposed with UV light on top of the blank polymer plate, then the excess is gently scrubbed away under warm water. Next, the plate is exposed one more time to allow the polymer to harden for use. The plate was then mounted to a type-high block on a Chandler & Price platen press.

The typography is arranged similar to how one would typeset a lockup for letterpress printing, with elements in line and stacked on top of one another. Some letters are substituted with numbers like how a typesetter might do in case he or she runs out of letters.
Two colors are used throughout the book, with minor printing alignment errors occurring. When printing with two colors, the pages must be aligned perfectly so that the color placement matches between runs.
